The Democratic primary just continues to get uglier. Right now, there is a lot talk from the Obama supporters that they will graciously accept defeat if that is what ends up happening, but they are only saying this because they can't possibly see it actually happening.
According to an article in The New York Times, "The third-ranking Democrat in the House of Representatives and one of the country’s most influential African-American leaders sharply criticized former President Bill Clinton this afternoon for what he called Mr. Clinton’s “bizarre” conduct during the Democratic primary campaign."
This comes after Clinton donned 'black face' and played the saxophone at a KKK rally. No, actually, it comes after a January comment where Mr. Bill compared Obama's primary victory in South Carolina to Jesse Jackson's win there some twenty years earlier. Obama's campaign fired back that Clinton was trying to downplay the win by comparing him to a marginal candidate. I just assumed, as all us sports fans know, that the reason Clinton compared Obama to Jackson is because Jackson was the only other black candidate to win the S.C. primary. In sports you can never compare a white athlete to a black athlete or a black one to a white one. If a white guy with the exact same skills as Michael Jordan showed up next year, the media would compare him to Larry Bird.
Anyway, Clinton responded to this recently by saying that Obama's team had played the race card. That's when the accusation of "bizarre conduct" came up. For my money, the Clintons have always been bizarre, but I'm pretty sure that this was only politics as usual. I mean, God forbid that someone should mention race in an election or say things that otherwise might be an attempt to win support. But in the charged Democratic primary, standard political rhetoric has now become "fightin' words".
It's a beautiful thing.
